The Shiny Object Problem

Post #1 Of an Internet Marketing Series

Watching out for shiny Objects.

When you're trying to build your internet business, it's easy to get distracted with new product offers and marketing hype.  Check out the information below, maybe it will save you both time and money.

Avoid The Shiny Object Syndrome

Let’s face it, there are new product launches every day in the make-money-online niche.  Every one of these will give you a reason to buy that product with claims to increase your traffic, get you more leads, convert better and so on.  It’s tempting to react to these and reach for your credit card without giving much thought to how they will impact your current business strategy.

I’m not going to say that you won’t get any value out of these products or services.  A lot of them will contain information that you don’t currently have access to or give you insight on a particular aspect of the Make-Money-OnLine niche(MMO).  The problem is that many (most) of these products are a rehash of the same product released a year ago or more.

Evaluate the Claims

When you’re checking out a product, pay attention to the actual claims made in the sales literature.  If the claim is that it’s a 1-2-3 step to fantastic income, beware, something is not right.  If it claims that you don’t need anything; training, a web presence, traffic or any investment (other than purchasing the product) beware.  Often the claims will display large amounts of income proof, copies of income statements or payouts from one of the several popular affiliate portals (JVZOO, Clickbank, Warrior+).  View these income claims with a bit of skepticism since they are not always true.  Remember the old adage, if an offer seems too good to be true then it’s probably too good to be true.

Face the fact that making money online is a business.  It can become your business and can be a profitable one.  But it also takes effort, time, perseverance and some expenses along the way to become the business you want it to be.

Offering a Better Strategy-Does it work for my business?

Many of the new products in the MMO niche will try to convince you that there is a better way to succeed on the internet than what you are currently doing.  They will offer different ways to succeed and try to convince you that what you’re doing will never be successful.

Face it, the grass always looks greener on the other side of the fence.  There are myriad techniques you can use to improve your online business.  Be careful of drastically changing what you are currently doing without some considerable thought.  New product sales pages can be very compelling and it’s easy to make a mistake and move your business into a direction that doesn’t match your original strategy.

You’ll never be a success in the online market if you continually change and modify your business strategy all the time.  It takes time to build your list, it takes time to gain the traffic volume that you expect, and it takes time to gain a following that Knows, Likes and Trusts you (the KLT rule). Stick to your plan.

Use Your Time Wisely

If you have been marketing online for any length of time, you already are on multiple sale lists.  You have or will have multiple emails daily announcing the latest, greatest product or service ever to hit the internet.  Use your time wisely.  It’s OK to take some time to check out products that seem to be in alignment with your current business strategy. Focus on those that would enhance your sales/marketing efforts.  Discard the rest, spend that time on improving your current situation, working on getting more or better leads into your subscriber list. Remember, you can always unsubscribe to any mailing list.

Hopefully, you have this issue under control.  You are focused on your business, your strategy and your customer base.  Protect your list, take care of your customers and always remember that you are running a business, treat it like one.
